When Nick was born his father was so shocked that he left the hospital room to vomit. His distraught mother couldn’t bring herself to hold him until he was four months old.

His disability came without any medical explanation – a rare occurrence called Phocomelia – and Nick and his parents spent many years asking why this cruel trick would happen to them. ‘My mother was a nurse and she did everything right during pregnancy but she blamed herself,’ he said.

‘It was so hard for them but right from the start they did their best to make me independent.’

‘My dad put me in the water at 18 months and gave the courage to learn how to swim.’

‘I also got really into football and skateboarding. I totally love the English Premier League.’

Nick’s father was a computer programmer and accountant and he taught his little son how to type with his toe at just 6 years old. His mum invented a special plastic device that meant he could hold a pen and pencil. (Attitude is Altitude)

(i) Birds eat different kinds of food. They are insect-eaters, seed-eaters, birds of prey, scavengers that eat dead animals and birds that like many different kinds of food. (ii) The sharp, strong beak of the woodpeckers is good for digging nests in wood as well as for digging out insects from tree trunks. The curved beak of a hawk is excellent for tearing up a small animal such as a field mouse. Its sharp nails too are a help in catching small animals.

The kingfisher has a bill suited for fishing. (iii) It is the most talented bird in catching fish. Many birds eat seeds. Short, strong bills are good for breaking seeds. (iv) Some birds catch insects in the air. (v)They open their mouths wide and catch insects very much like a fisherman gathers in fish with a net. A broad mouth and a short bill are best for catching insects in this way. Other birds have bills that are especially good for finding worms in the ground or for eating fruit. (vi) Scavengers need bills. They can tear meat with them.

I felt sorry for him but couldn’t bring myself to say anything. I asked the waiter to get us two cups of tea. Just as I was going to take my first sip, I heard father’s voice, ‘Do you have a pair of old shoes?’

‘Why?’ I asked.

‘The road is uneven and full of pebbles. It hurts while walking.’
