ANTONYMS AND SYNONYMS FOR ALL


What are synonyms?
Synonym /ˈsɪnənɪm /: A synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language.
For example:
·         Beautiful: Attractive, Pretty, Lovely, Stunning
·         Fair: Impartial, Unbiased, Just
·         Funny: Humorous, Comical, Hilarious, Hysterical

What are antonyms?

Antonym /ˈantənɪm/: An antonym is a word opposite in meaning to another
For example:
·         Divide – Unite
·         Drunk – Sober
·         Expand – Contract

Note: Choose the antonym or synonym of a particular word according to its part of speech and tense in the sentence.

Eg:       Despite these disadvantages (1) he excelled in life.
Find antonym for the underlined word.
Ans:  advantages (plural noun)

How to get command over antonyms and synonyms?
You might have used a dictionary. It meant to get meaning, pronunciation, usage, part of speech of a word. But it is a little difficult to get antonym or synonym for a word from a dictionary.
There comes the existence of thesaurus. It meant to get synonyms and sometimes antonyms for a word.
Suggestion: When you read a lesson from textbook you read for the gist of the passage at first. When you read the same second time you may concentrate on each incident and event and try to think beyond the lines. Then you will try to answer the question under comprehension section. But now to find new vocabulary you should read the same text again concentrating on some thematic words and underline them or list them. Then find the antonyms and synonyms from thesaurus. Finally make use of different synonyms and antonyms in your own sentences either in oral or written.
